Last gathering of 2010

On 20 November 2010 twenty members of the West Gauteng branch met at our usual venue to enjoy the last gathering of the year.

Tables were set up under the large shady Tipuana tree, coals were lit and members happily chatted to each other.

After a wet week on the West Rand we were fortunate to have good weather.

Margaret Humphries (in middle of the photograph) and her catering team saw to it that there were ample salads and sufficient pudding.

Kriek Fourie (left) did an excellent job of making and looking after the fires. It was a relaxing afternoon and we were able to get to know each other better. -- Penny Evans.

Cherised items

Report and Photographs by Penny Evans
(Click on any photograph to enlarge it.)

Thirty three members of the West Gauteng branch supported the “Bring and Brag” day on 16 October 2010. The hall was filled with cherished items of historical and genealogical interest.
Some fascinating stories were told about the brag items.

• Graham Southey brought trophies won by three generations of the Southey family at various agricultural shows. His great grandfather was the “merino king” for seventeen years. On the eighteenth year his middle son was the winner of the trophy. His father did not speak to him for three months!

• Frans Viljoen’s old and valuable family Bible was on display.

• Neels Coertse brought a stone carving done by someone during the Anglo Boer War while in the Greenpoint Concentration Camp.

• Giel Nel brought a 1957 telephone directory which he had found useful for his family history research

.• Robin Templeton had inherited a very old pictorial book of Johannesburg as well as a beautiful old silver shoe horn and button hook.

• Louise Dick had antique items of needlework including a crochet rug, patchwork cushion cover and a Voortrekker kappie which her grandmother had made for her own mother.

• Ds Hennie Le Roux also brought items of handwork done by his grandmother, mother and mother in law.

• Kriek Fourie’s inheritance included jukskei clubs carved from the wood of the knobthorn tree, an antique cutlery set and a shotgun which had belonged to his grandfather.

• Bob Saunders brought a photo showing four generations of the Saunders family. He told the story of the Kruger quarterpound left to the family by his grandfather.

• John and Iris Stephens brought their granddaughter, Talita, who wore her great great grandmother’s wedding dress. In addition they had brought a child’s dress which was about 100 years old and was first worn by Iris Stephens’s mother.

• Many other interesting items were on display. There were old coins including a 1879 threepenny piece, a fighting sword, a miniature set of the complete works of Shakespeare, an old diary with beautiful handwriting, old preserving jars, an antique peeler, medals won in various wars, old photos, locks of hair preserved in miniature containers and much more.

• Chairman Lucas Rinken brought the marbles his father had played with while in the Bethulie Concentration Camp and the fork which was all that remained after the family home was burnt down during the Anglo Boer War. In addition he brought many items of historical interest.

The enthusiastic participation by the members made this day a great success.

Preserving Your Family History Records Digitally

While gathering family history records over the years, you’ve probably been preserving them physically. So why consider preserving them digitally now?

This article discusses the benefits and challenges of using digital preservation to both augment and enhance the preservation of your family history records. It also explores solutions to the challenges, identifies what types of family history records are suitable for digital preservation, and summarizes what is required to get started archiving digital records.

In his final thoughts the writer states:

Digital preservation should not replace physical preservation of your family history records. Rather, it should be used to augment and enhance physical preservation. This paper has described numerous ways how digital preservation can do this.

Preserving your family history records digitally can be both enjoyable and satisfying. Get started now — don’t put it off. Encourage your friends and family to get started too. As you do the labor of love required to preserve these records digitally, you can expect to have an uplifting spiritual experience as you connect with your memories and your ancestors. And best of all, you’ll be able to sleep better at night!

Explaining the creation of a genealogical website

Report and photographs by Penny Evans

Our branch met on 18 September 2010 and we had our best attendance yet!

Thirty one people came along to hear Joe Botha speak about web pages for family genealogy.

Many years ago he had decided to research who the ancestors of his children were. His interest in the Botha family history grew and this led him to create the website “Botha in Southern Africa”.

Using a power point presentation he explained how to go about creating a website.

He told us:

• What it should look like;
• What needs to be placed onto it;
• How to structure it;
• How to write it;
• How to get it onto the internet, as well as
• The advantages and disadvantages.

He stressed that the first page should open quickly, should not be too busy and easily understandable.

He was a lively, amusing and very entertaining which made this technical topic interesting for the audience.

The two members who had their turn to speak for 5 minutes about their research were Graham Southey and Ruth Jobson.

Graham Southey’s interest in family history had started at an early age. As a young child he would ask his parents to explain who the various family members were. In the early 1950’s he started to write to family members asking for information.

Steadily over the years he was able to put together an incomplete family tree. All of his work was hand written into drawing books. He was able to collect many photographs of the Southey family. He is very fortunate to have photographs of his 1820 forefather and mother and of every male descendant down to himself.

Ruth Jobson’s parents lived on a mission station in the Northern Transvaal and so she was sent to live with her grandmother in Pietermaritzburg in order to attend school. Here she came into contact with many family members and heard various stories about the family. Later photographs and letters were given to her.

Her father, Dr Aitken, was interested in family history and had some research done by the Scots Research Society. Ruth’s grandfather, Rev Thomas Aitken, was sent to St Helena Island during the Boer war and there he met his future wife, Edith Mary Short. He later made his way to Cape Town where became a Baptist minister. Ruth’s other grandfather, James William Noble, came to SA to look after his brother, George, who had been sent to SA for his health.

George Noble became a minister in the Methodist Church. There are many ministers and missionaries in her family. Ruth says her biggest challenge at the moment is to research the Jobson family.

Recording cemetery information

Report and Photographs by Penny Evans

Helping
On a lovely sunny day eleven members of the West Gauteng branch went to the Tedderfield/
Eikenhof area to record graves at three farm cemeteries. We met at the Danie Theron Church and then followed John Stephens to the Elandsfontein family cemetery. Quickly the members set to work, some pruning plants, washing, dusting, taking photographs and recording information from headstones. It is here that members of the Viljoen, Slabbert, Scheffer and van Heerden families are buried. Not all the graves had headstones. The cemetery was in use up till 1992.

We then went to the Kamffer farm cemetery situated in the area known as Hartzenbergfontein. This cemetery was not enclosed, but rocks marked the perimeter. Most of the graves had no headstones, but were noticeable by the piles of rocks. The three headstones were for the Kamffer family. Nearby was a derelict farmhouse probably built in about 1870.
Cleaning
Writing

The last cemetery was Mulders- rus where members of the Mulder, Booy- sen, Strydom and Human families are buried.

These farm cemeteries are set in a scenic area. Veld fires had burnt the long grass making the task of finding and recording the graves much easier. The thirsty group finished at 1.30pm. We gathered at a nearby restaurant for a relaxing lunch.

It was a successful and productive day in peaceful surroundings away from the noise and rush of the city. The area is surprisingly beautiful once you leave the main roads.

Eating
Thank you to all who were involved in making this day a success. All information will be sent to the eGGSA gravestone project. GPS readings were taken at each of the cemeteries.

There are more cemeteries to be recorded in this area. Members who missed this occasion will have another opportunity to participate.

25 July 2010

Do you still remember our 10th anniversary coming up?

By John Stephens, joint vice-chairman and secretary

This is just to refresh your memory.

When Dennis Pretorius spoke to us at the beginning of the year, he challenged us to do ten good things for the Branch:

1. Richard Ford had to draw up a Ten Year Membership Gallery.
He has completed his task.
2. Neels Coertze had to compile and publish Ten Year Newsletters.
He has done an excellent job.
3. John Stephens had to do the same with Ten Year’s Minutes.
The task is complete.
4. Have we had Ten Fun meetings this year?
Not completed yet. Were they fun meetings up to now?
5. Have YOU added ten items/books to our library?
Some have done this, but have YOU?
6. Have we added ten family histories to our library?
No, I think we come very short of fulfilling this task. Remember that Dennis said he’d donate one family history to the library. We should follow suit even if our research is not completed yet.
7. Have we increased our membership by ten members?
Yes, we have doubled that!
8. Have we helped ten other people this year?
Yes. I think we have.
9. Have we given ten hours per month for transcriptions?
No, not all of us have. Some are still chewing on the Elephant we have to eat.
10. We have not stopped enjoying what we do, not even for ten minutes.
Is this true of YOU?

Now that we have reminded you, please give this some thought. Maybe you can still help us achieve all of these tasks this year.

To help you we have arranged the following program:
  1. 28 August – Cemetery recording in Eikenhof-area
  2. 4 September – Our Branch has a stall at the Genealogy Day in Pretoria
  3. 18 September – Joe Botha will address us on “Web Pages for Family Genealogy
  4. 16 October – We have a “fun”-day! We have organised a “Bring-and-Brag-day. You bring any item of sentimental value and enlighten us as to the reason for your bragging!
  5. 13 November – Training Course for Beginners, so that we may help even more than just ten people.
  6. 20 November – Another “fun”-day: “Bring-and-Braai” and in so doing, close a very interesting year.
But, the year hasn’t ended yet: On 22 January 2011 we have a real “fun”-day!! Our Branch, in collaboration with the Roodepoort Museum, is holding a Genealogy Day in the foyer of the Roodepoort Theater. A Whole day from 09.00 to 15.00 we will participate in this Open Day at the Museum.

We have invited other Branches to exhibit their Genealogy as well. All this is FREE of charge. Even free entrance to the Museum’s exhibition:”Go for Gold”. And a free guided tour of the Museum.

Please promote this day wherever you go.

    Legacy workshop: excellent turn out

    Report an photographs by Penny Evans

    What an excellent turn out for the meeting of the West Gauteng branch held on 17 July 2010! Thirty five people, of whom seven were visitors, were packed into our lecture room. Tables had been set up and there were laptops everywhere.

    Lucas Rinken, chairman, proceeded to give his “hands on” workshop on Legacy, a genealogical program. He used his laptop and the projector to cast the images onto the screen. Each person could therefore see the demonstrations.

    Legacy has many sophisticated features but the aim of this workshop was to teach the basics. Having explained how to input your own information, he responded to numerous questions. This was followed with a clear explanation and demonstration, allowing time to practise. Richard Ford and Dennis Pretorius (left above) acted as facilitators.

    This was a much needed workshop given by an expert in the use of Legacy. Each person felt free to ask for help, no matter how basic the question. Both the beginner and more experienced members gained by attending an afternoon well spent. Now is the time to put into practise what you have learnt.

    Ten Minute Talks

    Neels Coertse (right) entertained the members with anecdotes regarding the spelling of names, nicknames and surnames, using names from his family tree as examples.

    Giel Nel spoke about his first visit to the LDS Family History Centre in Parktown to search for information about his grandfather. He diligently searched the Hoopstad register, going through all entries from 1872 to 1876. Nothing was found. However, he succeeded when he went to the Hopetown register -- here was the baptism date for Gieljan Johannes Nel.

    Happy Birthday

    We would like to wish a member, Ruth Jobson (left) a very special 80th birthday on 19 July. May you have a wonderful day and many more happy birthdays.

    Recording cemetery information

    Report and Photographs by Penny Evans

    Iris Stephens on a chilly day.
    Members of the branch met on the chilly Saturday afternoon of 19 June 2010 to attend a Power Point presentation by chairman Lucas Rinken. He discussed the importance of recording cemetery information. The main reason for doing this is to ensure that information is not lost as cemeteries are desecrated.

    He urged members to actively participate by attending the cemetery recording outings. Records can be obtained from cemetery registers if they are available and in good condition or from the headstone. Before setting out some preparation is necessary. A spreadsheet conforming to the requirements of the Cemetery Recording Project should be used.

    He cautioned members not to go to cemeteries on their own but to go as a team.

    Lucas gave many tips and showed numerous photographs on the correct technique to be used when taking a photograph of a gravestone.

    Gerhard Marloth
    In his presentation he showed the many errors people make in trying to photograph the details on a gravestone. Any camera is suitable for the job, but some knowledge and equipment (tripod and umbrella) are necessary for satisfactory results. He ended his presentation by showing photographs of gravestones of some famous people.

    A need expressed by some members was that they wanted to know something about the research undertaken by other members of the group. It was decided to allow two members to speak for ten minutes after the main speaker.

    Gerard Marloth spoke about the use of Google Earth and the eGGSA website to locate a cemetery and gravestones of the Van der Westhuizen family.

    Penny Evans spoke about the Gass family and the difficulty in obtaining information about the original couple who came to South Africa in 1863.

    Familie-kentekens: vestig 'n nuwe tradisie

Ekself gaan nog solank ek lewe eendag vir my 'n familiewapen registreer.

    Johan Barkhuizen: Die familiewapens is nogal 'n Babelse verwarring.

    Ek is oortuig 'n nuwe ontwerp sal vir my persoonlik altyd bietjie vreemd bly.

They (the English) cannot do the Afrikaans gutteral G sound. We pronounce it laboo-skag (ggggg sound) nie.

    Andrié Labuschagne [nee Brill]: Here in Canada they pronounce it: laboo-shane.

    Casper Labuschagne: Thank you for telling me what the pronunciation in Canada is. It is exactly what I expected! This is also what I heard in England, where I always introduce myself as Labooshane.

    Margaret Cantrell ( Martin): My grandmother is a Labuschagne and she pronounced it Labusky as the word “sky”. Her brother pronounced it Labushane. They were both English-speaking. They were both living in South Africa.

    Reina: Many years ago in the small towns they said Lawwerskaiing, but I think the right way is Labeschagne. The sch is said as sk, the g is the very clear gurgling sound gg and the ne as nie.

    Casper Labuschagne: I have published a story on my website about our French ancestors, in which I discuss the matter of the spelling and pronunciation of our surname. Here is the link:

    Izak Labuschagne:
    In Durban: La Boo Shane;
    In Bloemfontein: La ber skag nie;
    In Northern Cape: L ber skaag;
    In the Army 1979: La Bush kenei;
    In the bedroom: Lub and squeeze me;
    In the Cape Labe skein;
    In Soweto: Die baas wat kan nie lag nie;
    In SACP: La boer slain.

    Casper Labuschagne: Ek wonder of daar 'n ander naam in SA is wat so verknoei word as ons mooi Franse naam. Dit sal nie sommer met Cronjé, De Villiers of Le Roux gebeur nie.

    Martin Labuschagne: Ek stem saam dat ons naam verwring word deur die meeste Suid-Afrikaners. Miskien moet ons almal ‘n punt maak en versoek dat ons van van nou af uitge spreek word volgens die korrekte Franse uitspraak.

    Casper Labuschagne: Martin, dit is 'n lofwaardige voorneme, maar ek vrees dat dit 300 jaar sal duur voordat die Franse uitspraak sal seëvier. Maar dit is nooit te laat om 'n veldtog te begin nie. Maar ons moet daar beslis nie 'n strydpunt of twisappel van maak nie. Liewer stille diplomasie toepas. Elkeen in sy eie kring. Dit is nie 'n kwessie van aanstellery nie, maar 'n uiting van trou aan ons Franse wortels.Ek is afkomstig uit die Vrystaat waar ons in ons familie die Franse uitspraak behou het. Toe ek in die jare 1947-'52 in Pretoria studeer het, het ek my medestudente en die proffe maklik kon oortuig hoe ek my naam uitspreek en uitgespreek wil hê. En hulle het dit gerespekteer. Sedert ek in Nederland woon, kon ek ons familietradisie baie maklik voortsit, omdat niemand hier erflik belas is met die Suid-Afrikaanse Labbeskagnie-uitspraak nie. My ervaring deur die jare heen was dat mense dit 'n mooi naam vind. Hoe dikwels het ek nie by 'n eerste kennismaking gehoor nie: "Wat hebt u een prachtige naam, meneer!" of  "Wat een mooie naam!"

    Maryna: Die Amerikaners het `n groot probleem. Vir hulle is ons laaa-boes--kek-nieee. Ons het nie eers geweet dat dit ons naam was wat hulle uitgeroep het nie.

    Les Labuschagne: As ‘n Engelsprekende Labuskagne het ek ongeveer 18 jaar in die buiteland diens gedoen as SA diplomat in verskeie plekke. Daar het ek Labooshaine gebruik (“like champaigne”) Eerstens was dit makliker vir buitelanders (wat nie of Hollands, Arabiers, Joods of Skotte was. Hierdie klomp kan die “g” soos die boere uitspreek!). Buitelanders wat Frans magtig was het Labooshaine normal gevind. Toe ek onlangs in Frankryk was, het ek verskeie mense getoets en die uitspraak was Labooshanje. Persoonlik wens ek ons kan nou besluit, my keuse sou wees “labushanje” of selfs “labooskanje”.

    Coenraad Labuschagne: Oorlede Professor Benedictus Kok (Afrikaans/Nederlands aan die Universiteit van die Oranje Vrystaat in die sestiger jare en later Rektor) het my in sy klas tereg gewys toe ek hom aanvat oor die uitspraak van my van. Voor die hele klas het hy my gevra om "Champagne" in Afrikaans uit te spreek. Ek het hom geantwoord met "Sham pan je" en sy antwoord was: "PRESIES, nou waarom wil jy "La bu skag nie" wees? Ek kon nie verder redeneer nie! Hy was onversetlik in sy opinie dat die fonetiese korekte uitspraak "La bus kan je" is.

    Maandbyeenkoms: Junie 2010

    Ons volgende maandbyeenkoms is op 19 Junie 2010. Dit begin om 14:00.

    Dit sal ‘n werkwinkel oor begraafplaasopnames wees. Aspekte wat ons sal behandel,sluit in die belangrikheid van sulke opnames. Heelwat mense besef  nie die noodsaaklikheid daarvan nie. Ons sal wys wat die waarde daarvan vir die genealoog is.

    Verder sal ons die proses van optekening deurwerk: watter vorms nodig is vir die werk; watter "gereedskap" 'n mens daarheen moet saamneem; hoe die werk gedoen moet word; hoe die data verwerk moet word; wat met die data gedoen moet word; hoe die data aangewend word.
        Lucas Rinken sal ‘n Powerpoint-aanbieding doen uit foto's van Gerard Marloth en John Stephens waarmee die huidige situasie aangedui sal word.

        Klik hier vir inligting oor die vergaderplek en 'n straatkaart.

        Dit sal ‘n baie nuttige en leersame werkswinkel wees.-- John Stephens.

        Irene-konsentrasiekamp, 1901-1902

        By Penny Evans, blog journalist

        At our meeting of the West Gauteng branch of the GSSA on 15 May 2010 Marie van der Walt (left) spoke about the book she had written entitled “Irene konsentrasiekamp 1901-1902. Die verhaal van Maria Johanna Prinsloo (gebore Malan). Gebore 13.10.1866 Oorlede 16.7.1944”

        Marie and her husband Jan van der Walt have lived in Irene for 45 years and for them the Irene Concentration Camp has been a link with the past. It was here that her husband’s grandmother, Maria Johanna (Miemie) Prinsloo and her six children had been sent during the Anglo Boer War.

        Miemie had been widowed when her husband Hendrik Frederick Cornelis Prinsloo was killed in action at Spioenkop on 26 January 1900. Tragically, in the space of two weeks, Miemie had to endure the loss of three of her children who had taken ill. Her children were buried in the concentration camp graveyard.

        Miemie, born Malan was thirty five years old when she wrote the first of 10 letters to family members outside the concentration camp. From these letters it is apparent that she was perceptive and an excellent communicator. She gave factual reports about a wide variety of activities and of conditions prevailing in the camp. She wrote about poverty, illness, deaths, burials, poor medical care, overpopulation and inadequate housing, about the cold, windy weather and the leaking tent.

        She also wrote of her longing for her family, her home and farm. She was anxious about everyone’s well being.

        Despite her own suffering she was able to care about others and be of support to them.
        Her letters are witness to a woman of very strong faith and courage, who was able to thank The Lord for the blessings she had.

        Through her letters, and in her own way, Miemie has helped to record a small part of our nation’s history. These letters have been handed over to the Heritage Foundation for safe keeping.

        Marie van der Walt wrote this book as a tribute to the memory of this Prinsloo family.

        Nalatigheid en vernielsug by argiewe

        In ‘n onlangse gesprek oor op SAGEN oor die nalatigheid en vernielsug by Suid-Afrikaanse argiewe is onstellende voorbeelde genoem.

        Isebelle Krauss skryf: ‘n Argivaris het ons vertel dat hulle ‘n persoon in hul leeskamer gekry het, ‘n redelik bekende genealoog wat ‘n register op die vloer gesit het, toe sy voet op die bladsy geplaas het om dit oop te hou om sodoende van bo af digitale foto’s te kan neem. Kan jy jou voorstel hoe die hele register, die rugbinding en die bros papier daardeur aangetas is?

        Só hoor ‘n mens van
        1. bladsye wat summier verwyder word uit registers -- sommer uitgeskeur of uitgesny word;
        2. ander wat die registers rondgooi;
        3. die bladsye plat druk en skeur;
        4. penmerke los en
        5. skryf op dokumente.
          Annelie Els, Pretoria skryf: Ek is al `n hele aantal jare die fotograaf vir die eGGSA-webwerf en het al BAIE dinge by die Nasionale Argiewe gesien wat my hare laat rys het. Ek is geensins `n opgeleide argivaris nie, maar het respek vir enigiets wat oud is, maak nie saak wat dit is nie.

          ‘n Mens sou dink dat die persoon wat agter die toonbank by die TAB-biblioteek werk iets weet van bewaring van ou dokumente.
          1. Ek het eendag aanskou hoe `n iemand een van die heel oudste boedels na die vrou agter die toonbank

          Genealogiedag lei tot herontmoeting ná 60 jaar

          Deur John Stephens,  mede-vise-voorsitter

          Links is ‘n foto wat ‘n regstreekse uitvloeisel is van die genealogiedag op Klerksdorp op 17 April 2010. Dit was 'n herontmoeting tussen 'n neef en 'n niggie ná byna 60 jaar.

          Dit het só gebeur:  net voordat ons voorsitter, Lucas Rinken, sy databasis en projektor daardie middag net na 15.00 wou afskakel, kom sit daar twee dames voor hom. Kan hy asseblief kyk wat hy op e-SAGI van die Camphers van Wolwespruit het, was hul versoek. Ek was langs hom en besef dat ek hier met eie familie te doen het. Dit blyk by navraag toe dat dié twee Martha Margaretha (Martie) CAMPHER en haar dogter Maggie le Grange is. Hulle was ook inwoners van die familieplaas, Wolwespruit, waar my ma skool gegaan het en my ouma gewoon het.

          Wes-Kaap stal uit

          Die Wes-Kaaptak van die GGSA het die afgelope naweek aan die stokperdjieskou by die Hoërskool Hermanus deelgeneem. Vanjaar het die Nasionale Argief in Kaapstad by hulle aangesluit en 'n stalletjie saam opgestel en beman.

          Die Genealogiedag in Klerksdorp

          Deur John Stephens, mede-vise-voorsitter en sekretaris

          Vir sommige van ons was dit nogal ‘n uittog om reeds voor 09:00 ons stalletjie by die Genealogiedag in Klerksdorp gereed te hê. Danksy 'n spanpoging was die sake in orde toe die eerste mense hul familienavrae begin vra het.

          Bo: Hendrik Louw, GGSA-president, gesels met teenwoordiges by die Genealogiedag in Klerksdorp. (Klik op enige foto om dit te vergroot.)

          Daarna het dit eenvoudig net nie afgeneem nie. Die hele dag, ononderbroke, het Lucas Rinken die e-SAGI laat werk. Talle en talle navrae is hanteer. Met die hulp van Kriek Fourie is ‘n hele aantal CD’s ook verkoop.

          Maar laat ek voor begin. Herzola van Heerden en Altha van Zyl van die Klerksdorp-museum, in samewerking met GGSA se Noordwestak, het hierdie genealogiese dag op 17 April 2010 in die Munisipale Museum, Klerksdorp (die ou tronk) aangebied. Die doel van die byeenkoms was om genealogie onder die algemene publiek te bevorder.

          Kenners van talle vanne (familiename) het hul kennis met die publiek gedeel. Stalletjies het met die spesifieke van (familienaam) buite-op gespog. Sowat 200 mense was teenwoordig. ‘n Mens kon inligting kry oor die Anglo-Boereoorlog en krygsgevangenes; oor 'n verskeidenheid familiename en boeke oor genealogiese onderwerpe was volop.

          Risks of family tree research

          London - Researching the family tree may seem an innocuous exercise in understanding your history, until you discover Uncle Albert is really your father.

          A new study reveals that people researching their family history often open a Pandora's Box of secrets that can unsettle and offend relatives, sometimes permanently damaging relations, News24.com reports.

          University of Warwick sociology professor Anne-Marie Kramer told the British Sociological Association's annual conference in Glasgow on Friday that, of the 224 people who gave her details of their family history research, around 30 mentioned conflict.

          Kramer said the main causes of conflict were uncovering unwelcome information, wanting information from relatives who didn't wish to give it, giving relatives inaccurate information, spending more time researching than with loved ones, and coming into contact with hostile relatives.

                Hobby-X, 2010: a lot of thank you's

                By Lucas Rinken, Chairman

                This year's show was a GREAT SUCCESS! Possibly the best we have ever had in the years I have been involved.

                The big difference was that our branch bought a computer projector and used same to good effect. Whereas in previous years, we sat at the back of the stand with my computer and our database and people had to queue around us there, often filling the store and with a limited number of people being able to see the display, this year the computer was in the front of the stall projected onto a large screen at the back of the stand where everybody INCLUDING passers-by could see and get interested.

                Warm wenk: kry boedelbesonderhede só

                Die boedelbesonderhede van ‘n persoon is vir die genealoog van groot belang, omdat dit drie waardevolle dokumente bevat: ‘n sterftekennis, ‘n testament en ‘n likwidasie- en distribusierekening

                Hoe kry ‘n mens dit?

                Dennis Pretorius verduidelik hieronder.

                Donate a book today

                This is the 10th year of our branch's existence. We've been challenged by Dennis Pretorius to focus on 10 things. One of his proposals was to add 10 items to the library each month. We can each participate by donating or lending books we don't need to the branch's library. The time to start is now by bringing an item to our meeting today.

                If you read this e-mail after the meeting do not despair. Contact Graham Southey at 011/87-4842 and commit by bringing the item(s) at the very next opportunity.

                The Hobby-X success

                Report and Photographs by Penny Evans, blog journalist

                From 4 to 7 March the West Gauteng branch set up an exhibit at Hobby X, held at the Northgate Dome in Johannesburg.

                Amid the many stalls featuring arts and crafts, power tools, state of the art sewing machines, model electric trains and ultra efficient juicing machines, our genealogy exhibit stood out as being different.

                Her ancestors, Lucas Rinken and e-SAGI were serious business.

                'n Mens hoor aldag hoe mense iets op Google gesoek en dan derduisende moontlik antwoorde gekry het.  Wie kan of wil nou deur die spul gaan of het die tyd daarvoor.

                Die oplossing vir hierdie probleem is aanhalingstekens.

                2010: Year of Family Fun

                Enthusiastic Dennis Pretorius.
                The year 2010 will be the "Year of Family Fun" for the West Gauteng Branch of the GSSA, Dennis Pretorius declared at the branch's latest meeting on 20 February.

                Dennis spoke about the branch entering its tenth year of existence. The branch was formed on 10 February 2001. He is one of  three founding members still involved in the branch's activities. The other two are Barbara Bouwer and Margaret Humphries.

                Dennis called on members to focus on what the branch could do to celebrate the completion of its first decade. He suggested, with input from Japie Bosch, the following:

                Besoek aan Noordwestak: 17 April 2010: Moenie dié een misloop nie

                Die Wes-Gautengtak se volgende maandvergadering behels 'n besoek aan die Noordwestak in Klerksdorp op 17 April 2010.

                Dit sal 'n uiters leersame dag vir enige genealoog wees, gemeet aan die program, soos hieronder weergegee.

                Lede word versoek om met John Stephens, mede-vise-voorsitter en sekretaris van die Wes-Gautengtak, te skakel om reisreëlings te tref, in die besonder om saamrygeleenthede te skep. Sy besonderhede is in die regterkantlyn.

                Vir diegene wat op hul eie wil reis: die byeenkoms word gehou by die Klerksdorp-museum, gehuisves in die ou tronk. 'n Padkaart verskyn hieronder.

                Daar is 'n verskil tussen uitsluiting en vrystelling

                Die beoogde Wet Op Die Beskerming van Persoonlike Inligting is vir menige mens doenig met die Genealogie ‘n kwelling. Daar is bekommernisse in hoe ‘n mate genealogiese inligting voortaan ingesamel of selfs geopenbaar mag word.

                Hierdie Wetsontwerp sal by GGSA se Algemene Jaarvergadering (AJV) in Maart 2010 aangespreek word. Neels Coertse, ‘n praktiserende prokureur met meer as 30 jaar regservaring en ‘n lid van die Wes-Gautengtak, sal ‘n referaat daaroor lewer. Hy was vroeër nege jaar lank ‘n advokaat.

                Writing your book

                Many a genealogist has the desire to publish a book, even if it is for distribution to the family only. How should you approach it?

                Chris Stevenson from Utah gives valuable information. Click here. For the uninformed: after you have entered the blog, click on the little black triangles, as shown on the left, to view the index.

                Müller-familiebond hou 'n saamtrek

                Die Antonie Michael Müller-familiebond (nakomelinge van Antonie Michael Müller) hou ’n saamtrek van 9 tot 11 April 2010 op die plaas Kleinberg, buite Mosselbaai.

                Daartydens word die opgedateerde Müller-boek van 1990 bekendgestel.  Georganiseerde toere na verskeie geskiedkundige plekke/plase in die distrikte van Mosselbaai, Riversdal en Herbertsdale sal ook onderneem word.

                Die Müller-saamtrek wil by die geleentheid nie net die koms van hul stamvader 275 jaar gelede herdenk nie maar ook nuwe familiebande smee. Navrae kan gerig word aan Koot Müller by 083/378-9550 of stuur 'n epos deur hier te klik.

                Labuschagne: 155 op poslys en 800 op Facebook

                Herman Labuschagne skryf soos volg op die Labuschagne-poslys:

                Ons het nou 155 lede. Ons het ook ‘n Facebook-groep met ver oor die 800. Tik ’n soektog in vir Labuschagne family research” – sonder aanhalingstekens, natuurlik.

                Nog iets waarmee julle dalk graag sal wil speel: kyk gerus by www.geni.com. Dit is ’n genealogiese aanlyn-program wat met Facebook geïntegreer is. Dit werk besonder eenvoudig. Dit is ’n konsep waaroor ek en ’n paar ander navorsers al 10 jaar gelede begin droom het.

                Newsletter, February 2010

                Neels Coertse (left) recently took over the reigns from Bob Saunders as editor of our newsletter.  Bob requested to stand down due to work pressure.

                Neels's first very informative letter follows below.  He indeed had a good example of how to do it after Bob's good work over the last year.

                Thanks, Bob, for informing us about branch activities and setting the standard.

                Welcome Neels. We look forward to your initiatives.

                Neels inter alia writes about:
                1. Questions and answers at the latest monthly meeting, giving a some important genealogical website links;
                2. The Protection of Personal Information Bill;
                3. A diary of important dates and
                4. Other branch activities.

                  Nog twee hartseer-verhale

                  Na aanleiding van die Sandra Laing-storie wat onlangs in die nuus was, het Isebelle Krauss soos volg op SAGen gereageer:

                  1. Gemengde bloed
                    Een aspek van die gemengde bloed in Afrikaner-are (dit sluit almal in wat Setlaarbloed het), is dat daar  ondertrouery met die Koi, Maleiers, Indiese mense en selfs mense van Angola plaasgevind het  Daar was min vroue en baie mans.  Buite-egtelike verwantskappe was veelvuldig.

                    Selfs Britse bloed is nie suiwer nie. En ek praat van middelklas-Britte.  Waar dink u het die slawe in Europa heen verdwyn nadat slawerny onwettig verklaar is?
